A method and apparatus for laying pipe with bell and spigot connections in a vertical wall trench. A first step involves providing a rigid guide chute having a feed end and a discharge end. The guide chute is radiused within deflection limits for pipe to be used. A second step involves mounting the guide chute to a mobile support. This enables the guide chute to be moved along a pipeline right of way. A third step involves inserting the discharge end of the guide chute into a vertical wall trench. A fourth step involves using a pipe feeder at the feed end of the guide chute to exert and maintain a force upon a pipe string sufficient to maintain all bell and spigot connections of the pipe string engaged during insertion. The guide chute prevents the force exerted by the pipe feeder from excessively deflecting the pipe string during insertion.
