A method and apparatus for excavating cohesive material comprises directing a jet of fluid, for example water, at a cutting face of the material and along spaced apart tracks to cut spaced apart slots and thereby to create a kerf between the two slots. The invention is particularly applicable to the excavating trenches for sub-sea cables and pipes to be laid in.
