A method for lining a clutch plate is described. Arcuate segments are formed from a sheet of friction material. These segments are applied at spaced, adjacent positions from different radial directions upon a side of an annular clutch plate. This forms lubrication channels. The segments are then bonded to the plate. The method limits waste of friction material and enables the lubrication channels to be formed without preforming or otherwise shaping the applied friction material.
