14D-1690 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved underwater object locating system uses reflected acoustic signals to guide a torpedo with respect to an object. The system employs a transducer consisting of two halves arranged vertically and twisted about a vertical axis with respect to each other. The transducer thus transmits a signal in the form of two horizontally angularly-displaced overlapping acoustic lobes. A zimuth information concerning the object is provided in terms of the relative magnitude of signals received by the two halves . Elevation information is provided in terms of the relative phase between the two signal. Each half of the transducer has a plurality of magnets-strictive elements, each having multiple windings thereon. Corresponding first windings on an elements or each half are connected in series, the windings of the two halves being connected in parallel for transmission of a signal. For reception of a signal the two halves are used separately, corresponding second windings on all elements of each half being connected in series and in series with additional windings of selected elements of the other half of the transducer.
