Methods and apparatus for machining highly concentric surfaces on a workpiece. In a pre-operation, locating features (54, 62, 62', 62") are machined into either end of a workpiece (11). These locating features are subsequently pulled apart so as to induce tension in the workpiece. In the state of tension the workpiece is rotated and one or more diameters (100, 104) are machined onto the workpiece (11).
