An apparatus and method of powering a cable telephony service platform (CTSP) (36) in a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network are provided which utilizes a combination of power from a local AC driven power source (50) having a back-up battery (52) for powering the CTSP within a network interface unit (NIU) (104) during interruptions in normal AC power, and a network generated charging current (106) which maintains the battery at full float voltage charge irrespective of the duration of any such interruptions in AC power delivery. Thus, the present invention minimizes power required to be delivered by the network while still ensuring support of reliable lifeline telephony service for cable telephony on an HFC network.
L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé pour alimenter en électricité une plate-forme de services téléphoniques par câbles (36) dans un réseau hybride de lignes coaxiales et de fibres. Cet appareil utilise une combinaison d'une source de puissance (50) alimentée en courant alternatif local avec une batterie de secours (52) pour alimenter la plate-forme susmentionnée dans une unité d'interface de réseau (104) pendant les coupures d'alimentation en courant alternatif normal. L'appareil selon l'invention comprend également un courant de charge généré par un réseau (106) qui maintient la batterie à un niveau de charge de tension totale quelle que soit la durée des coupures de courant alternatif. Ainsi, la présente invention permet de réduire la puissance devant être fournie par le réseau tout en assurant un service téléphonique de secours fiable pour la téléphonie par câbles sur un réseau hybride de lignes coaxiales et de fibres.
