An apparatus (10, 10A, 10B) for producing a thixotropic metallic melt by simultaneously controlledly cooling and stirring the melt to form solid particles of a first phase suspended in a residual liquid second phase. Vigorous stirring of the metallic melt results in the formation of degenerate dendritic particles having substantially spheroidal shapes. The metallic melt is stirred to rapidly and efficiently circulate the formation of semi-solid slurry. Circulation of the forming semi-solid slurry results in a substantially uniform temperature throughout. Through precision stirring and cooling, a semi-solid slurry is formed having a first solid phase of about 70- 80 wt.% suspended in a second liquid phase.

L'invention porte sur un appareil (10, 10A, 10B) de production d'une fonte de métal thixotropique en agissant simultanément sur le refroidissement et le brassage du bain de manière à former une première phase de particules métalliques en suspension dans une deuxième phase résiduelle liquide. Le brassage vigoureux du bain entraîne la formation de particules dendritiques dégénérées sensiblement sphériques. Le bain est brassé de manière à produire une circulation rapide et efficace du bain semi-solide qui assure une température sensiblement uniforme de la masse. En réglant avec précision le brassage et le refroidissement on obtient une fonte présentant première phase de particules solides d'environ 70-80 % en poids, en suspension dans une deuxième phase liquide.
