METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MAKING HIGH PURITY AMORPHOUS SILICA FIBERS Abstract of the Disclosure A method and apparatus are disclosed for producing amorphous silica fibers having excellent resistance to devitrification at temperatures up to 2500°F by leaching glass fibers. The method involves controlling the non-silica ingredients in the starting glass fibers and periodically gently stirring the glass fibers during leaching. The apparatus comprises a perforated basket resting in the upper half of a leaching tank. An acid solution is added to the tank through a rotating spray arm until the solution just barely covers a fibrous mass of loose sodium silicate fibers which are disposed in the perforated basket. A mechanical stirrer or agitator is provided proximate the top surface of the fibrous mass in addition to or in combination with the acid solution rotating spray arm. The periodic stirring and fluffing of the fibrous mass during the leaching cycle and a subsequent rinsing operation produces the uniformity desired in the leached fibers.
