A method of making metallic iron in which a compact, containing iron oxide such as iron ore or the like and a carbonaceous reductant such as coal or the like, is used as material, and the iron oxide is reduced through the application of heat, thereby making metallic iron. In the course of this reduction, a shell composed of metallic iron is generated and grown on the surface of the compact, and slag aggregates inside the shell. This reduction continues until substantially no iron oxide is present within the metallic iron shell. Subsequently, heating is further performed to melt the metallic iron and slag. Molten metallic iron and molten slag are separated one from the other, thereby obtaining metallic iron with a relatively high metallization ratio. Through the employment of an apparatus for making metallic iron of the present invention, the above-described method is efficiently carried out, and metallic iron having a high iron purity can be made continuously as well as productively not only from iron oxide having a high iron content but also from iron oxide having a relatively low iron content.

L'invention porte sur un procédé de production de fer métallique dans lequel on utilise comme matériaux de départ une briquette contenant de l'oxyde de fer tel que du minerai de fer ou analogue et un réducteur carboné que du charbon ou analogue, l'oxyde étant réduit par la chaleur pour donner l'oxyde métallique. Au cours de la réduction, il se crée une coquille de fer métallique qui grossit à la surface de la briquette tandis que du laitier forme un agrégat à l'intérieur de la coquille. La réduction se poursuit jusqu'à ce qu'il ne reste pratiquement plus d'oxyde de fer dans la coquille de fer métallique. On procède ensuite à un nouveau chauffage pour fondre le fer métallique et le laitier. Le fer métallique et le laitier fondus sont séparés l'un de l'autre de manière à obtenir du fer métallique à taux de métallisation relativement élevé. Le susdit procédé peut être mis en oeuvre efficacement à l'aide de l'appareil de production de fer métallique objet de la présente invention qui permet de produire en continu du fer métallique très pur et cela non seulement à partir d'oxyde de fer à haute teneur en fer, mais également à partir d'oxyde de fer à faible teneur en fer.
