A method of managing printing in an environment with a plurality of workstations and a plurality of printers in one or more networks and wherein the network also includes a document server and an identification generator, the method comprising: - polling a workstation when it connects to the network to determine what printers are connected thereto; - determining a unique ID of the workstation; - determining the type of printer; - determining the configuration of the printer from the type of printer and workstation location; - determining an ID code for each printer connected to the connected workstation using the identification generator; - developing a look up table with the unique ID of the workstation; type, configuration and ID code of each printer; - receiving a print request from a workstation at the document server; - identifying the configuration of a printer from the look up table in response to the print request; - sending the print request to the identified printer with the appropriate ID code, as identified by the look up table.
L'invention a pour objet un procédé de gestion de l'impression dans un environnement doté d'une pluralité de stations de travail et d'une pluralité d'imprimantes dans un ou plusieurs réseaux. Chaque station de travail possède un ID unique et chaque imprimante un type et une configuration qui dépendent de l'ID1 unique. Au moins une des imprimantes est connectée à une station de travail appartenant à la pluralité. Le réseau comprend également un serveur de documents ainsi qu'un générateur d'identification. Le procédé consiste : - à interroger une station de travail lorsqu'elle se connecte au réseau afin de déterminer quelles imprimantes sont connectées à celle-ci; - à déterminer l'ID unique de la station de travail; - à définir le type d'imprimante; - à déterminer la configuration de l'imprimante à partir de son type et de l'emplacement de la station de travail; - à attribuer, au moyen du générateur d'identification, un code d'identification (code ID) à chaque imprimante connectée à la station de travail connectée; - à élaborer une table de conversion de l'ID unique de la station de travail; - à définir le type et la configuration de l'imprimante ainsi que le code ID; - à recevoir dans le serveur de documents une demande d'impression provenant d'une station de travail; - à identifier, à partir de la table de conversion et en réponse à la demande d'impression, la configuration d'une imprimante capable de recevoir cette demande d'impression; - à transmettre la demande d'impression à l'imprimante identifiée grâce au code ID approprié qui a été défini par la table de conversion.
