Abstract of the Disclosure Metal pipe is manufactured by sequential press bending through cold working comprising crimping a metal plate, forming it into U-shape and O-shape, and welding the butt portion extending along the longitudinal direction of the O-formed workpiece. The improved method comprises finish forming part of length of the U-formed workpiece in the longitudinal direction from the front end partially into the O-shape, effecting transition forming of the workpiece simultaneously so that the portion adjacent to the rear end of the finish formed portion approaches the cross sectional shape from the U-shape to O-shape gradually toward the front end and the gap between opposed edges becomes gradually narrowed. The workpiece is advanced stepwise by a length less than the length of the finish formed portion, and forming of the work- piece into the O-shape and feeding are repeated alternately, finishing the U-formed workpiece into the O-shape cross section over its entire length. With this improved method, forming can be carried out with forming load of about 1/2 as compared with the conventional method, and also a wall thickness of the pipe to be formed can be improved by more than 50%.
