Apparatus for and a method of measuring the temperature of molten aluminum or aluminum alloys. The apparatus comprises a temperature measuring device, usually a thermocouple, contained within a protective tubular sheath, the sheath enclosing the temperature measuring device at least to a point above the point of maximum immersion in molten aluminum during use of the apparatus. The sheath comprises at least one inner layer closed at one end, and an outer layer, the outer layer being made of steel or cast iron, and the inner layer being made of a continuous refractory material. The outer layer and the at least one inner layer are free of discontinuous (refractory) refractory materials between them. The continuous refractory material may be, for example, a carbon fibre-reinforced carbon or graphite fibre-reinforced calcium silicate refractory, and is resistant to failure in, i.e. penetration by, molten aluminum or aluminum alloy. The apparatus is long-lived and durable and does not contaminate the molten metal when it fails.

Appareil et méthode pour mesurer la température de l'aluminium en fusion et des alliages d'aluminium. L'appareil comporte un dispositif de mesure de la température, habituellement un thermocouple, placé à l'intérieur d'une gaine tubulaire qui encaisse le dispositif de mesure de la température au moins jusqu'à un point au-dessus du point d'immersion maximale dans l'aluminium en fusion pendant l'utilisation de l'appareil. La gaine comporte au moins une couche interne fermée à une extrémité et faite d'un matériau réfractaire continu, et une couche externe faite d'acier ou de fonte. La couche externe et au moins une des couches internes sont toutes deux libres de matériaux réfractaires (réfractaires) discontinus. Le matériau réfractaire continu peut être, par exemple, un carbone renforcé par fibres de carbone ou du silicate de calcium renforcé par fibres de graphite. Il est résistant aux défaillances, c'est-à-dire à la pénétration d'aluminium en fusion ou d'alliages d'aluminium. L'appareil est durable et ne contamine pas le métal en fusion quand il fait défaut.
