ABSTRACT A tool for measuring the thickness of fat in a carcess is dis- closed. The tool body has a cavity in which is disposed an extendable and retractable cable forming part of a transducer. A knife is rigidly mounted to the forward end of the tool body for insertion into the carcass fat and a slide coupled to the cable is arranged slidably rearwardly of the knife for abutment against the fat surface. The distance which the slide has to move to abut the fat surface when the knife has been fully inserted is indi- cative of the fat thickness and this is manifested by an appropriate signal from the transducer.
