ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for measuring the circulatory function of a living body in which a systolic blood pressure value is measured based on recognition of an initial Korotkoff sound made at the start of a reduction in pressure of a pressurized cuff affixed to a patient's arm. After the recognition of the initial Korotkoff sound, conditions are relaxed to enable measurement of pulse rate, judgment of the correctness of the systolic blood pressure value and a decision as to whether applied pressure is adequate, all on the basis of sounds from the patient's blood vessel. Finally, diastolic blood pressure is measured based again on recognition of the Korotkoff sound.
