An apparatus and method for measuring the stiffness or geometry of an engine. The outer casing of an instrument is threadedly inserted into a spark plug or injector hole. A probe is properly oriented and brought into contact with the top of a piston by rotating an inner cylinder relative to the outer casing. The casing and cylinder are then locked in proper position. Pressure is applied incrementally and piston deflection is measured. The deflection is compared with that of an enginehaving known parameters and the condition of the tested engine can be obtained.
