An image-based measurement technique that directly measures the orientation of fibers in a moving web that comprises nonwoven material measures the orientation angles of the individual fibers so that a more robust estimate of the statistical distribution of fibers is obtained. The technique includes the steps of: (a) illuminating an area on at least one side of the web with radiation; (b) obtaining at least one digital image of the illuminated area; and (c) calculating the fiber orientation of the web by processing the at least one digital image with a gradient operator thereby analyzing the distribution of observed fiber orientation angles within the image. The gradient operator is preferably of a non-integer order between (1/4) and (3/4) and particularly between (1/3) and (2/3). The use of fractional-gradient operators yields more reliable results than when integer order gradients are employed.
L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de mesurer directement, à partir d'images, l'orientation des fibres d'une bande continue en mouvement comprenant une matière non tissée, la mesure des angles d'orientation des fibres individuelles permettant d'obtenir une estimation plus robuste de la répartition statistique des fibres. Le procédé comporte les étapes consistant à: (a) éclairer à l'aide d'un rayonnement une zone se situant sur au moins une face de la bande; (b) obtenir au moins une image numérique de la zone éclairée; et (c) calculer l'orientation des fibres de la bande en traitant la ou les images numérique(s) à l'aide d'un opérateur de gradient, ce qui permet d'analyser dans l'image la répartition des angles d'orientation des fibres observées. L'ordre de l'opérateur de gradient est de préférence un nombre non entier compris entre 1/4 et 3/4, en particulier entre 1/3 et 2/3. L'utilisation d'opérateurs fractionnaires permet d'obtenir des résultats plus fiables qu'avec des gradients dont l'ordre est un nombre entier.
