An area of skin (2) is illuminated by a light source (3) via a polarizing filter (4). Red and infra-red images of the illuminated skin (2) are then obtained by a digital camera (1) via a second polarizing filter (5) arranged to filter visible light having the same polarity as light passing through the first polarizing filter (4). These images are then processed by a computer (6) which utilises the detected levels of red light and a model of the interaction of light with melanin to determine expected levels of infra-red light returned by the illuminated area of skin (2) in the absence of surface reflections. A surface map indicative of skin texture is then determined based of the differences between the estimated levels of infra-red light returned by the illuminated area of skin (2) in the absence of surface reflections and the detected levels of infra-red light detected by the camera (1).
