ABSTRACT A method and an apparatus for measuring the ratio between the tension and substance of a running web of paper, foil or the like are disclosed. The web is passed over two spaced supports and caused to vibrate at its natural frequency by application of pressure variations between the supports. The phases of the pressure variations and the web vibration are compared and the result is used to control the frequency of the pressure variations to give the phase shift that causes vibration of the web at its natural frequency.
