27293-34 ABSTRACT Method of and apparatus for measuring the effective viscosity and the elastic properties of coatings. In previously known "rolling sphere" methods for measuring the effective viscosity and elastic properties of coatings, the disadvantage exists that the inclination of the coated plate causes the forma- tion of runs and also the settling of the relatively heavy solvent vapors. In order to exclude this disadvantage of the known methods, the coated substrate is aligned horizontally, and after being displaced from the position of rest of a magnetic field, a magnetizable sphere is excited to rolling motions in conjunction with the movement of the horizontally arranged substrate under the influence of the field gradient of a permanent magnet or electromagnet arranged underneath the substrate, these motions serving as the basis of measurement.
