ABSTRACT A method and an apparatus for determining the location of a piece of timber having a flat top surface and two unfinished side surfaces or determining the width and location of its flat top surface. The piece of timber is subjected to radiation simultaneously from opposite sides coming from two sources of radiation, each of which is emitting different types of rays towards the the top surface and one of the side surfaces. Rays of different type reflected from the piece of timber are detected separately.
