- 1 - Abstract Apparatus for measuring the water content of a material having a source of infra-red radiation for directing at the material. There is a detector for such radiation and first and second filters for selecting radiation for detection at wavelength bands in which respectively the radiation is and is not affected by water content within a predetermined range. The system produces a signal representing the water content by referencing the detected signal obtained with the first filter against the detected signal obtained with the second filter. The first filter has a response over a waveband that lies outside the range 1.91 to 1.98µm, and the center wavelength of which lies in the range 1.76 to 1.87µm. The second filter has a response over a waveband removed from the response waveband of said first filter and substantially unaffected by the water content detectable at the response waveband of said first filter.
