ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for smelting fusible substances such as ore concentrates, more particularly fine grained sulphi- dic ore concentrates, wherein the substances are melted in an oxidizing atmosphere and the melt is subjected to an after treat- ment, for the recovery of valuable metals, by blowing reducing gases thereonto, characterized in that, for the purpose of after treating the melt, the gases are blown thereonto through a plurality of lances, and in that the slag phase formed, and the specifically heavier metal containing phase, are removed separate- ly from each other.
