A method and apparatus for melting metals uses microwave energy as the primary source of heat. The metal or mixture of metals is placed in a ceramic crucible (10) which couples, at least partially, with the microwaves to be used. The crucible is encased in a ceramic casket (14) for insulation and placed within a microwave chamber (1). The chamber (1) may be evacuated and refilled to exclude oxygen. After melting of the metal, the crucible (10) may be removed for pouring, or the metal may be poured within the chamber (1) by dripping or running into a heated mold within the chamber. Apparent coupling of the microwaves with softened or molten metal produces high temperatures with great energy savings.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de fondre des métaux par utilisation de l'énergie micro-onde comme source thermique principale. Le métal ou le mélange de métaux est placé dans un creuset (10) en céramique couplé, du moins partiellement, avec les micro-ondes à utiliser. Ledit creuset est encastré dans une cassette (14) en céramique aux fins de son isolation, puis placé dans une chambre (1) à micro-ondes. Ladite chambre (1) peut être vidée et remplie de façon à exclure l'oxygène. Après la fusion du métal, on peut retirer le creuset (10) et le verser ou verser le métal à l'intérieur de la chambre (1) en l'égouttant ou en le coulant dans un moule chauffé à l'intérieur de ladite chambre. Le couplage apparent des micro-ondes avec le métal ramolli ou fondu produit des températures élevées, ce qui permet de réaliser des économies d'énergie considérables.
