ABSTRACT A method and an apparatus for mixing liquid and paste-like substance, such as in preparing foods in kettles. An upward and downward circulatory motion of the substance is produced by two oppositely rotating vertically spaced mixers, which while rotated are raised and lowered through the substance. Each mixer comprises radially outer blade portions inclined so as to produce a lifting force on the substance as the mixer is rotated. The upper mixer has at least one radially inner portion inclined so as to produce a downward pressing force on the substance as the mixer is rotated. The lower mixer having at least one downwardly extending portion inclined so as to produce an outwardly directed force on said substance towards the periphery of the kettle.
