A method for increasing channel utilization for a data channel transmitting a multiplex of a set of one or more encoded program streams, each program stream being decodeable by a corresponding decoder, each corresponding decoder including a corresponding decoder buffer, the decoder buffers having a maximum allowable size, the method comprising selecting encoded pictures to be modified, said selecting according to a criterion which includes preventing any underflow of any decoder buffer, modifying each said selected encoded picture to form a corresponding modified encoded picture, said modified encoded picture having less data than said selected encoded picture, and transmitting the corresponding modified encoded pictures through the channel in place of the selected encoded pictures.
Procédé permettant d'augmenter l'utilisation des canaux pour un canal de données transmettant un multiplex constitué d'un ou plusieurs flux de programmes, chaque flux de programmes étant décodable par un décodeur correspondant, chaque décodeur correspondant comprenant un tampon de décodeur correspondant, les tampons de décodeur ayant une dimension admissible maximum. Le procédé consiste à choisir les images codées à modifier, ce choix se faisant d'après des critères qui sont notamment d'éviter la sous-utilisation d'un tampon de décodeur quelconque, à modifier chaque image codée choisie de façon à former une image codée modifiée de façon correspondante, cette image codée modifiée comprenant moins de données que l'image codée choisie, et à transmettre les images codées modifiées correspondanptes par le canal au lieu des images codées choisies.
