An apparatus and method for modulating an incident light beam for forming a two-dimensional projection image. The apparatus includes a plurality of elongated elements each having a reflective surface. These are suspended parallel to each other above a substrate with their respective ends supported, forming a column of adjacent reflecting surfaces grouped according to display elements. Alternate ones of each group are deformable by applying a voltage with respect to the substrate. An approximately flat center section of each deformed element is substantially parallel to and a predetermined distance from a center section of each undeformed element. A light beam incident to the column of adjacent reflecting surfaces is reflected from a group of elongated elements when the alternate ones are undeformed and diffracted when the alternate ones are deformed. A distance of movement is controlled or a ratio of between reflection and diffraction periods determines a display intensity for the corresponding display element.
L'invention concerne un procédé et appareil permettant de moduler un faisceau lumineux incident de façon à former une image de projection bidimensionnelle. L'appareil comprend une pluralité d'éléments allongés, chacun possédant une surface réfléchissante. Ces éléments sont suspendus parallèlement les uns aux autres, au-dessus d'un substrat, leurs extrémités respectives supportées formant une colonne de surfaces réfléchissantes adjacentes groupées en fonction d'éléments d'affichage. Les éléments de chaque groupe sont alternativement déformables par application d'une tension par rapport au substrat. Une section centrale approximativement plate de chaque élément déformé est sensiblement parallèle à une section centrale de chaque élément non déformé, et à une distance prédéterminée de ceux-ci. Un faisceau lumineux incident à la colonne de surfaces réfléchissantes adjacentes est réfléchi à partir d'un groupe d'éléments allongés, lorsque les éléments alternativement déformables ne sont pas déformés, et diffracté lorsque ces éléments sont déformés. Une longueur de déplacement est contrôlée ou un rapport entre les périodes de réflexion et de diffraction détermine une intensité d'affichage pour l'élément d'affichage correspondant.
