ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for monitoring an area in front of an elevator door by photoelectric image point sensors grouped one-dimensionally or two-dimensionally to provide image signals suitable to be digitally processed and with sensor signal preprocessing circuits, based on mutual interaction of the image points employed for allowing good resolution in a wide lighting range; transformation of an image signal current to a voltage dependent on the logarithm thereof, conversion of the voltage to a first pulse signal, combination of the pulse signals of the different channels in an interaction network and supplying resulting channel-specific signals to an electric charge pump for forming a second pulse signal of which the frequency is dependent on ratios between the frequencies of the other channels' first pulse signals, and sensing the differences between the frequencies of the channel-specific second pulse signals for determining relative changes in intensity of an object being imaged.
