735.062-FOREIGN METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MONITORING AND CONTROLLING A MULTIPLICITY OF AIR GUNS FOR SEISMIC SURVEYING Inventor: Stephen V. Chelminski ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Firing a seismic source of the type called an air gun is detected by means of a fluid pressure sensor transduce located in the housing of a solenoid actuated control valve. Through a pressurized gas supply port the pressure sensor is in fluid communication with a shuttle-operating chamber of the air gun, and the sensor detects a surge or increase in fluid pressure in a portion of shuttle-operating chamber resulting from rapid motion of the shuttle thereby providing an elec- trical signal which is an accurate indication of the actual time of firing, called the "shot instant" of the air gun. Thus, the geophysical survey crew is enabled to determine the actual shot instant of each air gun in an array of air guns, so that their respective shot instants can be synchronized, sequenced, or otherwise controlled in accordance with a desired seismic survey program. If a misfire or malfunction of the air gun is detected by means of this fluid pressure sensor, the malfunc- tioning air gun can be shut down by actuating the solenoid valve, which is a novel dual action solenoid valve, thereby prevent- ing pressurized gas from being supplied to that particular air gun. The valve includes a valve stem with radial gas inlet ports and radial triggering ports. A solenoid plunger is movable to close one or the other of the sets of ports. A cham- fered seal-engaging lip and shoulder on the plunger are in fluid contact with the gas inlet port and pressure forces on the lip and shoulder are balanced to reduce the electrical power requirements of the solenoid.
