Extra high quality or ultralong digital audio channels (CH1, Ch2...Chn) with an aggregate data bit rate that exceeds the maximum data bit rate for a digital storage medium (12), such as a CD, laser disk or digital audio tape, are recorded on the audio medium. The recording is accomplished by compressing (C1, C2...Cn) the data bit rates of the multi-channel input signals so that their aggregate data bit rate after compression does not exceed the maximum for the storage medium, multiplexing (2) the compressd audio signals, encoding (6) the multiplexed signal (32) into a predetermined format, and recording (10) the encoded signal on the storage medium. Playback is achieved by decoding (16), demultiplexing (18) and decompressing (D1, D2...Dn) the signals form the storage medium in a manner complementary to the recording process.
On enregistre sur un support audio des voies audio numériques ultra-longues ou à qualité ultra-élevée (CH1, Ch2...Chn), dont le débit binaire total est supérieur au débit binaire maximum dudit support d'informations numériques (12), ce dernier pouvant être un disque compact, un disque laser ou une bande magnétique audio numérique. Pour effectuer l'enregistrement, on comprime (C1, C2...Cn) les débits binaires des signaux d'entrée multivoie pour que leur débit binaire total après la compression ne dépasse pas le débit binaire maximum du support d'informations, on multiplexe (2) les signaux audio comprimés, on code (6) le signal multiplexé obtenu (32) dans un format prédéterminé et on enregistre (10) le signal codé sur le support d'informations. Pour la lecture, on décode (16), on démultiplexe (18) et on décomprime (D1, D2...Dn) les signaux enregistrés sur le support d'informations d'une manière complémentaire au procédé d'enregistrement.
