A method and apparatus eliminates an au- dible noise burst after reestablishment of an ex- ternal timing signal in a radio base station (102). The radio base station (102) temporarily oper- ates from an internal timing signals generator (226) to provide digital communications over a radio link with a portable communication unit (120). The method and aparatus detect (304, 306, 308) the reestablishment of the external timing signal, and control (312) the portable communication unit (120) to execute a radio link reestablishment procedure in response to the reestablishment of the external timing sig- nal.
