Method and apparatus for obtaining a sample of blood from a patient for subsequent diagnostic tests, e.g., glucose monitoring. In one aspect of the invention, the method comprises the steps of: (a) forming an unobstructed opening in the area of the skin from which the sample of blood is to be extracted; and (b) extracting the sample of blood from the unobstructed opening in the skin, with the aid of a vacuum and a stretching of the skin. In another aspect of the invention, an apparatus for carrying out the method described previously is provided. The apparatus comprises: (a) a device for forming an unobstructed opening in an area of skin from which said sample is to be extracted, preferably a lancing assembly; and (b) a vacuum pump. Preferably, the apparatus also includes a housing. In a further aspect of the invention, a pneumatic lancing assembly is provided. The pneumatic lancing assembly uses differential gas pressure to thrust a lancet into skin tissue. In another aspect of this invention, an article is provided for an article capable of both collecting blood and detecting an analyze in that blood. The article, which contains an appropriate detection element for determining the amount of analyte in the blood, can be used in conjunction with a meter that measures the signal generated by the detection element of the article.
Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé et à un appareil permettant de prélever du sang chez un patient en vue d'essais diagnostiques ultérieurs destinés par exemple à la surveillance du glucose. Une réalisation de l'invention se rapporte au procédé qui consiste (a) à former une ouverture dégagée dans une zone de la peau à travers de laquelle on va prélever le sang et (b) à prélever l'échantillon de sang à partir de cette ouverture dégagée dans la peau, à l'aide d'une aspiration et d'un étirement de la peau. Une autre réalisation de l'invention se rapporte à un appareil permettant de mettre en oeuvre le procédé ci-dessus. Cet appareil comporte (a) un dispositif conçu pour former une ouverture dégagée dans une zone de peau à travers de laquelle on va prélever le sang, de préférence un dispositif de percement, et (b) une pompe à vide. De préférence, ledit dispositif comporte également un boîtier. Une autre réalisation de l'invention concerne un dispositif de percement pneumatique qui utilise une pression différentielle de gaz pour projeter une lancette dans le tissu de la peau. Enfin, une autre réalisation de cette invention se rapporte à un article susceptible à la fois de prélever du sang et de déceler la présence d'un analyte dans le sang prélevé. Cet article, qui contient un élément de détection conçu pour déterminer la quantité de l'analyte dans le sang, peut être utilisé conjointement à un dispositif de mesure qui mesure le signal généré par l'élément de détection de l'article.
