ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus are provided for opening a sliver for dispersion in staple. The method features continuously tearing, without compression, the sliver into a plurality of filament bundles, each of a smaller cross section than that of the sliver. The apparatus features a plurality of points mounted for rotation about a common axis, means for feeding the sliver at a first speed into contact with one of the points, and means for rotating the points at a surface speed at least 290 times faster than the first speed to successively tear the sliver into filament bundles.
