A method and apparatus for operating geography-altering machinery such as a track-type tractor, road grader, paver or the like relative to a work site to alter the geography of the site toward a desired condition. A first digital three-dimensional model of the desired site geography, and a second digital three-dimensional model of the actual site geography are stored in a digital data storage facility. The machine is equipped with a position receiver to determine in three-dimensional space the location of the machine relative to the site. A dynamic database receives the machine position information, determines the difference between the first and second site models and generates representational signals of that difference for directing the operation of the machine to bring the actual site geography into conformity with the desired site geography. In one embodiment, the signals representing the machine position and the difference between the first and second site models used to generate an operator display which is updated in real time. Alternately, the signals representing the difference between the first and second site models can be supplied to automatic machine controls for autonomous or semi-autonomous operation of the machine.
Méthode et matériel permettant de commander des engins de terrassement comme un tracteur à chenilles, une niveleuse, un finisseur ou autres engins associés à un chantier et destinés au terrassement d'un site. Un premier modèle numérique tridimensionnel représentant le profil désiré du site et un second modèle numérique tridimensionnel reproduisant le profil actuel du site sont sauvegardés dans un système de stockage numérique. L'engin de terrassement est équipé d'un récepteur de positionnement, qui détermine en trois dimensions le positionnement de l'engin sur le site. Une base de données dynamique reçoit les données sur l'emplacement de l'engin, détermine les différences entre le premier et le second modèles et génère des signaux représentationnels de la différence entre les deux. Ces signaux servent à diriger l'engin pour qu'il rende le site actuel conforme au site désiré. Dans une version, les signaux correspondant à l'emplacement de l'engin et la différence entre le premier et le second modèles du site servent à générer une représentation visuelle, pour l'opérateur, qui est mise à jour en temps réel. Les signaux représentant la différence entre le premier et le second modèles de site peuvent aussi alimenter des unités de commande automatique de l'engin afin de lui permettre de fonctionner en mode autonome ou semi-autonome.
