A method and apparatus for optimizing the interface between actuable sawmill machinery and a high speed lugged transfer chain includes measuring chain stretch of a lugged transfer chain mounted in cooperation with the lugged transfer chain and generating chain stretch data; processing the chain stretch data and comparing the chain stretch data with non- stretched chain data and generating actual lug position data; and comparing the actual lug position data with actuation instruction date of the sawmill machinery and adjusting actuation of the sawmill machinery to account for actual lug positions of lugs on the lugged transfer chain whereby workpieces carried on the lugs are timely operated on by the sawmill machinery without interference between the sawmill machinery and subsequent workpieces carried on the lugs.
