An embodiment includes an optical source, a dispersive element and a passive optical compression device. A transform-limited optical pulse is generated by the optical source, The optical pulse is then provided to the passive optical compression device. The passive optical compression device, typically using a passive optical notch filter, has a significant amplitude response to filter or spectrally shape the optical pulse as the pulse passes through the device. As the optical pulse's frequency bandwidth increases due to the filtering, the optical pulse's temporal pulse width is reduced or compressed down to a desired narrow pulse width without the use of control signals or high-speed electro-optics.
