A method and a test instrument are provided for measuring program clock reference (PCR) jitter in a data stream, such as an MPEG-2 transport stream. The test instrument includes a line interface circuit for receiving the data stream, a digital computer for processing the data stream, a local clock for generating timestamps and a display unit. The digital computer extracts from the data stream a PCR sample which represents a count of a system time clock used to generate the data stream. The timestamp is obtained from the local clock and is associated with the PCR sample value. The digital computer determines a line of best fit to a set of values including the PCR sample value and the timestamp, and previously received PCR sample values and associated timestamps. The line of best fit represents a reconstructed system time clock. The digital computer determines a PCR jitter value for the PCR sample value by determining a distance between the line of best fit and the PCR sample value. The PCR jitter value may be displayed on the display unit, preferably in a histogram.
L'invention est constituée par une méthode et un appareil servant à mesurer le sautillement du signal de référence d'horloge (« PCR ») dans une chaîne de données, telle qu'une chaîne de transfert MPEG-2. L'appareil de mesure comporte un circuit d'interface de ligne servant à recevoir la chaîne de données, un ordinateur numérique servant à traiter cette chaîne de données, une horloge locale servant à engendrer des signaux d'horodatage et une unité d'affichage. L'ordinateur numérique extrait de la chaîne de données un échantillon PCR qui représente le compte d'un signal d'horodatage utilisé pour engendrer la chaîne de données. Le signal d'horodatage est obtenu de l'horloge locale et est associé à la valeur de l'échantillon PCR. L'ordinateur numérique détermine la ligne d'ajustement optimal d'un ensemble de valeurs incluant l'échantillon PCR et le signal d'horodatage, ainsi que les échantillons PCR reçus précédemment et les signaux d'horodatage connexes. La ligne d'ajustement optimal représente un signal d'horloge reconstitué. L'ordinateur numérique détermine le sautillement de l'échantillon PCR en déterminant la distance entre la ligne d'ajustement optimal et la valeur de l'échantillon PCR. Le sautillement PCR peut être affiché sur l'unité d'affichage, de préférence sous la forme d'un histogramme.
