A method and a test instrument are provided for measuring program clock reference (PCR) jitter in a data stream, such as an MPEG-2 transport stream. The test instrument includes a line interface circuit for receiving the data stream, a digital computer for processing the data stream and a local clock for generating timestamps. The digital computer extracts from the data stream a PCR sample value which represents a count of a system time clock used to generate the data stream. The timestamp is obtained from the local clock and is associated with the PCR sample value. The digital computer determines a reconstructed system time clock from a set of values including the PCR sample value and the timestamp, and previously-received PCR sample values and associated timestamps within a window representative of a predetermined time interval. The window is shifted as new PCR sample values are received. The digital computer determines a PCR jitter value for the PCR sample value by determining a deviation of the PCR sample value from the reconstructed system time clock. The PCR jitter value may be displayed on a display unit, preferably in a histogram.
L'invention est constituée par une méthode et un appareil servant à mesurer les effets engendrés dans les chaînes de données, telles les chaînes de transmission MPEG-2, par l'instabilité du signal d'horloge de référence (SHR) d'un programme. L'appareil de mesure de l'invention comprend un circuit d'interface de ligne servant à recevoir les chaînes de données, un ordinateur numérique servant à traiter les chaînes de données et une horloge locale servant à engendrer les horodateurs. L'ordinateur numérique extrait un échantillon du SHR qui représente la valeur du signal de temps système utilisé pour engendrer la chaîne de données. L'horodateur est obtenu de l'horloge locale et est associé à la valeur de l'échantillon du SHR. L'ordinateur numérique détermine un signal de temps système reconstitué à partir d'un ensemble de valeurs incluant celle de l'échantillon du SHR et l'horodateur, ainsi que celles des échantillons du SHR et les horodateur reçus antérieurement dans une fenêtre représentative d'un intervalle de temps prédéterminé. Cette fenêtre est décalée quand les nouvelles valeurs des échantillons du SHR sont reçues. L'ordinateur numérique détermine l'instabilité du SHR pour un échantillon donné en déterminant l'écart de cet échantillon par rapport au signal de temps système reconstituté. Cette instabilité peut être affichée sur un moniteur, de préférence sous la forme d'un histogramme.
