ABSTRACT Digital processing of speech signals for compression/ expansion pitch change is provided by writing and reading a ROM at different rates and controlling the discard/repeat segments of memory to be integral multiples of the pitch period. The write address and memory samples the audio signal and records digital samples in sequence. The read address follows this sequence at a controlled rate either faster or slower than the writing rate to obtain expansion or compression of the speech signal. Thus the read address will approach or recede from the write address depending on whether its clock rate is greater or less than the writing rate necessitating a jump in address position. It is the decision of when to make this jump that is controlled by the logic to prevent the read pointer from overtaking the write pointer or falling too far behind it. The jump in the read address location is always in a direction such that it does not cross the writing address.
