A method and apparatus for positioning a pipe joint connector. The apparatus includes a body adapted for positioning transversely across an arcuate spine of a selected one of two arcuate segments of a pipe joint connector. A first arm is secured to the body. The first arm is adapted for positioning along a first sidewall of the selected arcuate segment. A first engagement pin extends inwardly from a remote end of the first arm. The first engagement pin is adapted to engage a first cove on the first sidewall. A second arm is detachably secured to the body. The second arm is adapted for positioning along a second sidewall of the selected arcuate segment. A second engagement pin extends inwardly from a remote end of the second arm. The second engagement pin is adapted to engage a second cove on the second sidewall. The second engagement pin and the first engagement pin have a common axis.
