A process and apparatus for prechilling tap water by using a heat exchanger to provide a path of flow for the warm tap water fed into an ice maker machine and another path for the cold waste water ejected by the machine by means of which heat can be transferred through walls separating the fluids. The prechilling is achieved by using an insulated, elongated casing having top and bottom ends forming there between a closed reservoir housing the heat exchanger made of copper tubing or the like. The heat exchanger is in the form of a coil followed by a substantially straight tube within and surrounded by the coil's turns. A heat-insulating hollow member, which is closed at one end, is spaced from the straight tube to be surrounded by the turns and to form between that hollow member and the straight tube an elongated chamber whose bottom is open to the interior of the reservoir.

Procédé et appareil servant à prérefroidir l'eau de robinet au moyen d'un échangeur de chaleur pour fournir une voie d'acheminement de l'eau tempérée qui alimente une machine à glace et une autre voie d'acheminement de l'eau résiduaire froide évacuée de la machine. L'appareil comprend des dispositifs permettant de transférer la chaleur à travers les parois séparant les fluides. Le prérefroidissement est réalisé en utilisant un tubage de revêtement isolé, de forme allongée, dont les extrémités supérieure et inférieure forment entre elles un réservoir fermé logeant l'échangeur de chaleur fait d'un tubage de cuivre ou d'un autre matériau du genre. L'échangeur de chaleur a la forme d'un serpentin suivi par un tube essentiellement droit autour duquel le serpentin s'enroule. Un membre creux calorifugé, qui est fermé à une extrémité, est à distance du tube droit entouré du serpentin pour former entre lui et le tube droit une chambre de forme allongée dont la partie inférieure est ouverte sur l'intérieur du réservoir.
