ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fibre web is supported by a fabric or between two fabrics and passes through a press nip formed by two press rollers to be de- watered by pressing. An elastic compression mat or plurality of mats thicker than the fabrics also pass through the press nip. The mater- ial and/or structure of the mat or mats is selected so that, based on the phenomenon of hysteresis, a retardation is obtained for the restor- ation of the thickness of the mat, occurring after the median line of the nip, such that the compression pressure in the nip is reduced rela- tively steeply, as compared with a symmetric distribution of the nip pressure, and due to the retardation the fabric or fabrics may be sep- arated very soon after the median line of the nip, so that rewetting of the web is reduced.
