ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The furnace has a feeding channel through which firewood is transported into a fire chamber. A steam pipe leads into the channel. Through said pipe, steam is intro- duced into the solid fuel material in bursts as soon as a certain temperature is exceeded within the said channel. The steam increases the humidity in the air and the moisture of the firewood, thereby reliably preventing a spreading of the fire within the feeding channel, without simultaneously impairing combustion within the fire chamber.
