This invention provides a method and apparatus for ensuring the saftey of a worker climbing an extension ladder. It has a safety cable which extends the full length of an extension ladder, regardless of the degree of extension of the ladder and the cable is fully retractible into a housing unit which both stores the cable such that the cable cannot be fouled, and provides a brake to prevent rapid movement of the cable such as might occur in the event of a fall of a worker. The invention makes it possible for a worker to climb and descend a ladder safely whether or not both hands are on the ladder and has particular application in the fire fighting field.
