The invention is related to a method and an apparatus for processing fragmented material by pyrolysis, wherein the material to be processed is fed in a processing cavity (3) and heated therein. In the method the fragmented material is continuously fed through the processing cavity (3) and heated at least at the beginning of the process with microwave energy. The apparatus comprises means (15, 16) for feeding the fragmented material to be processed continuously through said cavity (3); microwave applicator means (6) for initiating heating of the material at the beginning of the process; and means (4, 5) for collecting the pyrolysis end product.
