ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for producing a dried particulate coal fuel having a reduced tendency to spontaneous- ly ignite from particulate low rank coal. Features of the method include the use of a contacting vessel into which is in- jected a mist of a coal-deactivating fluid which intimately con- tacts the particulate coal in the vessel. The deactivating fluid may be special oil compositions and latex compositions.
