Abstract This invention relates to production of alumina from alumina trihydratc and includes a method and appa- ratus therefor. The method is directed to production of anhydrous alumina from alumina trihydrate in which water is removed in a precalcining zone wherein the alumina trihydrate is suspended in, heated by and separated from a stream of hot gases. The method includes recrystallizing precalcined dehydrated alumina to a alumina in a reaction chamber. Fuel and oxygen containing gas are fed to a combustion zone in the chamber. Precalcined alumina and fuel are mixsd and suspended in the oxygen containing gas fed to the com- bustion zone. Exothermal recrystallization is initiated by further heating the precalcined alumina by suspending that material in hot combustion gases so that recrystal- lized alumina exits the reaction chamber suspended in the combustion gas stream. The recrystallized alumina is separated from the gas stream and cooled to produce an- hydrous alumina. The apparatus includes a precalciner which is connected to a reaction chamber. That chamber is provided with gas inlet and outlet means. The outlet means is located above the inlet means. Means e also provided for introducing alumina from the precalciner and for introduaing fuel into the reaction chamber. The chamber had a downwardly, inwardly inclined bottom and means for introducing precaleined alumina and fuel into the chamber in intersecting paths. The outlet means is connected to a separator means which is connected to a cooler means for cooling the alumina separated from the separator.
