The present invention resides in a method and apparatus for producing a one-side zinc electroplated strip having enhanced phosphating characteristics. The strip is produced by an apparatus such that prior to the step of electroplating, the non-electroplated side of the steel strip is cathodically pickled. After pickling the strip is then passed through a plating unit. The improvement involves the cathodic pickling minimizing staining and etching to the non-electroplated strip surface by the zinc electrolyte during electroplating of the oppsite strip surface.
