An apparatus and method for producing an oriented plastic strap having a predetermined desired thickness for use in connection with the strapping of packages or the like, is disclosed. A sheet workpiece is conducted into a nipdefined between a pair of milling and stretching rollers wherein one of the rollers is rotated at a lineal surface velocity which is greater than the lineal surfacevelocity of the other roller and the rollers are rotated in opposite directions. One of the rollers effectively brakes or retards one of the surfaces of the sheet workpiece while the other one of the rollers effectively accelerates the other one of the surfaces of the sheet workpiece as the workpiece passes through the nip defined between the rollers whereby the workpiece is simultaneously milled and stretched. Additional heating is provided in connection with the surface of the sheet workpiece which is exposed to the ambient air prior to entry of the workpiece into the nip defined between the pair of rollers such that both surfaces will have similar temperature levels so as to exhibit similar density properties and still further, the edge portions of the sheet workpiece are also heated so as toadvantageously control the degree of flatness of the sheet material or workpieceacross the width thereof. The flatness quality of the sheet workpiece can also be achieved through means of specially contoured milling rollers defining the zero gap assembly nip, or by means of specially contoured extrusion dies, whereby the edge portions are rendered thinner as compared to the central portion of the sheet workpiece such that upon milling and stretching of the workpiece, which operations tend to thicken the edge portions of the sheet workpiece, the edge portions will exhibit thickness dimensions commensurate with the thickness dimension of the central portion of the sheet workpiece.
Appareil et méthode de production de feuillards en plastique orientés, d'épaisseur prédéterminée et destinés au cerclage de paquets ou d'objets équivalents. On amène une pièce à usiner en feuille au point de pinçage que forment deux cylindres de foulage et d'étirage tournant en sens contraire à des vitesses surfaciques linéaires différentes. L'un de ces cylindres freine ou retarde efficacement l'une des surfaces de la pièce à usiner lorsqu'elle passe par le point de pinçage, ce qui exerce sur elle une action d'écrasement et d'étirage simultanée. En réchauffant la surface exposée à l'air ambiant de la pièce à usiner avant de faire passer celle-ci par le point de pinçage, on fait en sorte que les deux surfaces de la pièce se trouvent alors à la même température et offrent les mêmes propriétés, les bords de la pièce étant également réchauffés pour assurer un meilleur contrôle du degré d'épaisseur de la feuille de matériau sur l'ensemble de sa largeur. On obtient également une certaine qualité d'épaisseur de la pièce en feuille au moyen de cylindres de foulage qui, par leur profil spécial, définissent le point de pinçage d'un ensemble à écartement nul ou au moyen de filières d'extrusion spécialement profilées : leur profil permet en effet d'obtenir des bords plus minces que la section centrale de la pièce en feuille pour que, par les opérations d'écrasement et d'étirage de la pièce, qui tendent à épaissir les bords de la feuille, les bords obtenus soient d'une épaisseur comparable à celle de la section centrale de la pièce.
