A novel reactor and process are disclosed for the production of titanium dioxide by oxidation of titanium tetrachloride at relatively low temperatures to minimize wear and tear on reactor preheating equipment. TiCl4 is reacted with oxygen at a pressure of atmospheric or greater and a reaction temperature of at least 700°C in an oxidation reactor, oxygen being introduced into the reactor at a first inlet point before any TiCl4 and at least one further inlet point, the TiCl4 introduced into the reactor being heated to a temperature of less than about 427°C prior to introductions.

Le second ensemble d'introduction (26) du gaz oxydant peut être situé avant ou après l'introduction de la totalité du tétrachlorure de titane dans le réacteur (10). On introduit le tétrachlorure de titane dans le réacteur (10) à une température relativement basse, inférieure à 427 DEG C environ, par un premier ensemble d'introduction (20) du tétrachlorure de titane. La température de réaction dans le réacteur est au moins de 700 DEG C environ. Eventuellement, on peut introduire une seconde quantité de tétrachlorure de titane dans le réacteur (10) par un second ensemble d'introduction (34) du tétrachlorure de titane.
