ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This application discloses a method of providing a loading device for an engine test stand and the apparatus pro- vided thereby. According to the method of the present invention, a loading device for an engine test stand which provides a load on an engine proportional to the cube of the engine R.P.M. at which it is desired to test, but is easily modifiable to provide different load characteristics, includes the steps of providing a standard power absorption unit having a capacity which is greater than that required for testing current size engines, altering the load characteristics of the power absorption unit by modifying the turbine vanes thereof to provide a power ab- sorption unit for testing a current size engine, and operatively installing said modified power absorption unit in a test stand. The apparatus is in the form of a fixed-fill power absorption unit easily modifiable to have different load characteristics. The unit includes a fixed turbine wheel of toroidal cross section, a rotary turbine wheel axially aligned with said fixed turbine wheel, also of toroidal cross section and in close proxim- ity to said fixed turbine wheel, a shaft fixedly mounted to said rotatable turbine wheel and adapted to rotate it, a housing sealingly enclosing said turbine wheel and carrying said shaft, water inlet means provided on and communicating with the interior of said housing, water outlet means connected to said housing and communicating with the interior thereof to allow water to cir- culate therethrough if desired, said turbine wheels adapted to have their turbine vanes trimmed as necessary on an angle measured from a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation thereof with the root of said angle being at the minor diameter of said torus to provide a power absorption unit which can have its loading characteristics changed merely by replacing one or both turbine wheels to provide a variation in load according to the angle at which said turbine wheels have been trimmed.
